The 1971 Memphis State Tigers had a tough season overall, but the team found wins where it mattered. The Tigers’ 4-1 conference record vaulted them over Louisville, Tulsa, and North Texas State to win the Missouri Valley Conference. Longtime head coach Billy J. Murphy retired in style at the end of the season, with his team winning 28-9 at the Pasadena Bowl.
